If Kenya is to become a middle-income country within the next decade, then more investment needs to be made in research and innovation than is currently the case. The Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR) was established in 2008 with a broad mandate of spearheading Health Research Capacity Strengthening (HRCS) in Kenya. The overarching purpose of the HRCS initiative is “to strengthen institutional and individual capacity to conduct and/or coordinate health research and to improve its use in evidence-based policy formulation, decision-making and health care delivery”. This annual report covers the activities undertaken by CNHR for the 2012/2013 financial year, which is the 5th and final year of the Phase 1 of the HRCS initiative.
